Pins, combs and headbands: what holds in which hair

The prettiest piece in the world is useless if it slides out during the first dance. What holds is a function of the fixing, the weight of the piece and the hair it is going into, and those three interact in ways that are not obvious from a product photograph.

Here is what generally works, and what generally does not.

Fine hair: light pins, many of them

Fine hair has less to grip and cannot carry weight. A heavy comb will work its way loose over an evening no matter how well it was set, because there is not enough hair for the teeth to engage.

The reliable approach is several small pins distributed through a style rather than one substantial piece. It also photographs better in fine hair, where a single large ornament tends to dominate.

Thick hair: combs and substantial pieces

Thick hair holds almost anything, and the risk runs the other way: a small delicate pin disappears into it entirely. A comb with deep teeth engages properly and stays put all day.

Scale up rather than adding quantity. One well-placed comb reads more clearly in thick hair than a dozen small pins, which will simply not be visible.

Headbands need a shape, not just a size

A rigid headband sits on the crown and relies on tension across the head, which means the fit is genuinely individual. Ones with a teeth comb along the underside are far more secure because they grip rather than press.

For an updo, a headband worn further back through the style rather than across the front is both more secure and more flattering to most face shapes. The stylist will usually suggest this at the trial.

Where the piece goes decides how it holds

Anything anchored into an existing structure – the base of a chignon, the twist of a French roll, a braid – is dramatically more secure than something set into loose hair. This is why stylists build the style first and place the accessory into it, rather than the reverse.

If you are wearing hair down, plan for a smaller and lighter piece than you would with an updo. There is simply less to hold onto.

What a stylist will ask you for

Two things: the pieces themselves in advance of the day, and a decision about whether the accessory is the focal point or a supporting detail. That second question changes the whole style, and answering it at the trial saves an argument on the morning.

Bring more pieces to the trial than you intend to wear. Deciding to leave something out is easy; wishing you had brought an alternative is not.

Quantity: the multi-piece sets

Sets of six or seven pins exist because scattered placement needs numbers to read as deliberate. Three pins in a style looks like three pins; seven looks like a treatment.

The same logic applies across a bridal party, which is why these sets are priced to be bought several at a time. Buy for the whole party at once rather than piecemeal, for plating consistency as much as for stock.
