What to buy for bridesmaids, and what to leave to them
Buying accessories for other people is a sizing problem before it is a taste problem. Some categories fit almost everybody and some do not, and getting that wrong turns a gift into an awkward conversation two weeks before the wedding.
The safe list is shorter than most people assume, and it is worth knowing which side of the line each category falls on.
Earrings are the safest thing you can buy
They have no sizing at all, they suit every hair length, and they photograph consistently across a group. Drop earrings in particular read clearly at the distance most wedding photographs are taken from.
The only real check is whether everyone has pierced ears, which is worth asking rather than assuming. It is a short question and it avoids an obvious problem.
Bracelets: usually fine, with one caveat
Chain bracelets with an extender fit almost any wrist and are a reliable choice. Rigid bangles are the exception, because they have to pass over the hand rather than around the wrist, and hand width varies far more than wrist circumference.
If you want bangles, buy the adjustable cuff style with an open back rather than a closed circle. It solves the problem entirely.
Rings are the one to avoid
Ring size is individual, varies with temperature and time of day, and is the one thing people are least likely to know off the top of their head. Buying rings for a party is a reliable way to end up with three that do not fit.
If a ring is the piece you want, buy it for yourself and choose something else for the party. Stackable band sets are a lovely thing to own and a difficult thing to gift.
Hair accessories: check the hair first
Pins and combs depend on hair type in a way that earrings do not. A comb bought for somebody with very fine hair will not hold, and a delicate pin will vanish in thick hair.
If the party has a range of hair types, headbands with a teeth comb are the most forgiving choice. Otherwise, buying the same tone in two different fixings is a better plan than the same piece for everyone.
Coherence without uniformity
Fixing the metal tone and letting people choose the design within it gives a group that photographs as a group without anyone wearing something they dislike. It is also easier on stock, because you are not depending on six of one line being available.
If you want to be more prescriptive than that, prescribe the tone and the category – gold, drop earrings – and leave the rest open.
Buy in one order
Plating differs slightly between production batches, and pieces bought weeks apart can be visibly different side by side. One order removes that risk, and it also means one delivery to track instead of five.
It makes returns simpler too. A single order number covers the whole party, which matters if a piece needs to go back.
