Caring for plated jewellery so it survives the year

Gold-plated and silver-plated jewellery is a thin layer of precious metal over a base, usually brass. The layer is measured in microns and it is finite: once it has worn through, the base shows and no amount of polishing brings it back.

Almost everything that removes plating is avoidable, and knowing the order of severity helps because it tells you what actually matters.

Perfume and hairspray first

Alcohol-based products are the fastest way to damage plating, and they are also the ones most likely to be applied while jewellery is already on. Perfume, hairspray and setting spray all attack the surface directly.

The rule is simple and it is the single most useful thing on this page: jewellery goes on last, after everything else, and comes off first at the end of the evening. On a wedding morning that means after the hair is finished and the perfume is dry.

Then sweat and skin

Skin chemistry varies considerably and some people simply wear through plating faster than others. Salt and acidity in sweat both corrode the base metal at any point where the plating has thinned.

The practical response is to wipe pieces with a soft dry cloth after wearing. It takes seconds and removes the residue that would otherwise sit against the metal for months in a drawer.

Then friction

Bangles and cuffs wear at the points where they touch a desk, a table edge or another bangle. Stacked bracelets rub against each other constantly, which is why the insides of a stack dull faster than the outsides.

This is not a reason to avoid stacking. It is a reason to expect the pieces you wear daily to age faster than the ones kept for occasions, and to buy accordingly.

Water is less urgent than people think

Brief contact with clean water is not a serious problem. What matters is chlorine, salt water and detergent, all of which are aggressive, and leaving a piece damp, which lets moisture sit in crevices and settings.

Take jewellery off for swimming and washing up. Getting caught in the rain in a bracelet is not an emergency.

Storage: dry, dark, separate

Airtight is better than open, because air-borne sulphur is what tarnishes silver-tone finishes. A small zip bag in a box is genuinely effective and costs nothing.

Separate is the other half. Pieces stored loose together scratch each other, and a rhinestone setting will mark a smooth plated surface easily. The pouches pieces arrive in are worth keeping for exactly this.

What not to do

Do not use silver polish or a polishing cloth on plated jewellery. Those work by removing a microscopic surface layer, which is precisely the layer you are trying to keep. On solid silver that is fine; on plate it accelerates the failure.

Ultrasonic cleaners are similarly a bad idea for anything with a glued stone, which includes most rhinestone bridal pieces. Warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush is the correct method, followed by drying thoroughly.
